Last post on Thursday talked about various types of exceptions. Though this is not an exhaustive list, but this sure was a decent sized list.

How is exception management really done? What are the key steps for this?

To understand this, we need to understand the point of exception generation. Exceptions can be generated at some of these various points in the process (excluding for vendor management):

  • At the time of material dispatch / delivery by the vendor, including receipt by the client
  • At the time of submission of the documents or supporting with the claim (though not detected at this stage)
  • At the scan point of these documents for processing – this is one of the main areas where the exception can actually be caught
  • At indexing stage – where a record is created with some basic data, either in the workflow or in the ERP system
  • At the time of detailed record entry
  • At the time when the document is returned after clearing the first set of exceptions
